We will use the money to transform a village in rural Guinea-Bissau in 2018. You can read about our project here: Water, making a world of difference
We have been looking at three villages where we have worked in the past to give you an idea of the scale of transformation which is possible with your help.
This week we will look at the third and final village: Cali.
This is a new village where we are working for the first time in 2017. It lies in an area which is notorious for poor water, often contaminated with high levels of iron and other metals, as well as bacteria.
We decided to drill a deep borehole here, going down 45m which is our deepest so far. A recent test showed that the water is safe to drink which is great news for the villagers.
We have also installed a solar powered pump and storage tank, which is part of our wider assessment of how best to provide reliable water to these villages.
I visited in September 2017, just as work was starting to clear the land for the market garden. The arrival of clean water has really motivated the villagers to work hard. When we arrived the new market garden was buzzing with people marking out plots, and a separate group were cooking a big communal meal for the workers.
Our philosophy is to help the villagers to help themselves, so it is great to see these levels of motivation and commitment.
